Vanilla Revival Campaign and Youth Engagement in Vanilla Farming Systems

Initiatives

The need to plant new vanilla gardens is a growing concern for the Ugandan vanilla industry as vanilla takes quite a while to mature – about 3 years to be exact.

To maintain the sustainable profitability of Uganda’s vanilla industry, there is a need to increase the quantity of vanilla production. Hence, planting new gardens is a priority.

With the continued increasing demand for all-natural and organic vanilla from major global food companies, VANEX aspires to position Uganda as the number one source of high-quality vanilla in the world.

Thus, VANEX is proactively campaigning and encouraging more people to get into vanilla growing, especially the youth.

According to Florence Nagawa, VANEX executive director, “more youth engagement in vanilla farming systems is exactly what the Ugandan vanilla industry needs because it will not only boost Uganda’s vanilla production but will also provide a source of income for youths, enabling them to grow and prosper. Thus decreasing the unemployment rates of young people in Uganda. And also contributing to Uganda’s 2040 vision of attaining middle-income status.”
