Iganga district in eastern Uganda was highly affected by the price crash of Vanilla in 2004. Prices dropped from about 150,000 shillings a kilo to about 1000 shillings. Iganga vanilla farmers suffered major losses, many cut down their plants and gave up growing vanilla.
However, working in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Iganga Local Government and local vanilla organisations, VANEX has revitalised vanilla growing in Iganga.
Many farmers are getting back to growing vanilla and there have also been some newcomers in recent years. As of right now, Iganga is the leading producer of high-quality vanilla in Busoga Region.
